Beyond the Training Night: 707 Air Cadets Take on Fall FTX
Cadets from 707 Marion Orr Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron recently took part in a Field Training Exercise (FTX) at Woodland Trails from October 9–11, developing and applying field skills in an outdoor environment.
The exercise brought together 91 cadets and staff for a weekend of fieldcraft instruction and team activities. Cadets participated in shelter building, handheld radio operation, navigation, and other field skills.
For some cadets, this was their first FTX, while others built on skills developed during previous exercises. FCpl Bebe Lin, a Level 3 cadet, said "the FTX was a great new experience," highlighting the opportunity to connect with cadets across different ranks.
“Through our syndicates, I was able to connect with Level 1s, seniors, and talk a lot more with them,” stated FCpl Lin.
For FCpl Lin, the lantern lesson was another highlight. "It was a “hands-on, new experience" said FCpl Lin, we got to “put the gas in, pump the lanterns, learn to handle them safely, then light them.”
The FTX also provided senior cadets with opportunities to take on leadership and instructional responsibilities. Senior cadets assisted with planning, instruction, and team leadership, helping younger cadets develop their skills throughout the exercise.
“I think it’s nice to come to the FTX and see the cadets develop,” said WO2 Bella Li. “Seeing them apply themselves and be out in the field, it’s nice to see people’s strengths."
Now a senior cadet herself, the experience reminded WO2 Li of her own early years in the squadron.
“I think it’s sweet. It reminds me of when I was a little cadet" WO2 Li reflected.
By the conclusion of the exercise, cadets had gained practical experience that will contribute to their training throughout the year.
FCpl Lin noted that the FTX offered an experience that cadets cannot get “on a regular training night."
